Week 1 - Day 2: Spinash harvest

Tuesday 26th June 2012
A nice growing spinach and some spinach in their bed

These are the spinach in their bed. The light green leaves plants are the spinach. The other plants are simple grass wich will be romevde and given to feed the chicken. In permaculture all is used. Nothing is wasted, that's great to see that it's make running the farm very efficiently. Absolutely no chemical product is used here.

  • How do we harvest the spinach ?
In order to make an efficient and respectful harvest, notice that 50% maximum of the plant has to be cut. Otherwise, it will be harder for the plant to grow again.
To illustrate this cutting technique, look how the spinach are after the partial cutting described previously
We can see that some of the stems are cut at the bottom while the others are still complete
  •  How do we sort the spinach recently harvested ?
This is a good harvest. Fully organic, beautiful and tasty ! !

These spinach are supposed to be delivered to differents restaurants in Auroville. That's why the leaves have to be sorted. Some of them are eaten by insects and we can see some holes on their surface.
On these pics we see the difference between the "good" leaves on the left, and the holed leaves on the both pictures

Holes are great "organic touch" but the most beautiful leaves will be kept for the restaurants. The holed ones will be kept for the personal consumtion of Buddha Garden. Yum ! Buddha Garden serves the breakfast at 9 am, after the two and a half working hours. Have a look on the next page to see the "tamil breakfast time".
